Ghost of Neckbeard

September 18th, 2008

I’m pretty new to painting, but there was a local Monster art show a month or two back and I thought it was as good an opportunity as any to try to pick it up. This was one of thos pieces, The Ghost of Neckbeard, named for my inability to grow hair on my face…

My favorite time of year is coming up fast, and the superstores are making sure that we know it. Yeah, the holiday season kicks off with Halloween just a month and a half away. Today I was soaking in the frightful fun at Target when I found this guy for just $5. Equipped with fangs, pointed ears, glow-in-the-dark eyes, a pumpkin pale, and a ghost sheet, you can dress him for all sorts of trick or treatery.

Man, I love Halloween.

Nemomatic

I’m always interested in retro-futuristic art; deco-inspired pieces that look like remnants from the 1939 Worlds Fair. Nemo Gould is making some fantastic sculptures out of found objects, many of which with moving, mechanical parts. Take a look at his stuff and be sure to check out the videos of his pieces in action.

Gettin’ Schooled

I’ve created this blog as a means of keeping people updated with the work that I’m doing that doesn’t necessarily fit into my portfolio, but is still fun and worth checking out. In addition, I plan to post about random and cool things that I happen to find on the web in the the art and design world.

Most recently, a local elementary school has been keeping me busy creatively. It’s a great gig because I have virtually unlimited freedom, and they’re a pretty ambitious school, so there’s no dearth of big projects to work on.

Last year Tom Sapp of Real Characters, Inc. in Atlanta gifted the school with a mascot. As a thank you, I dressed him in adventure gear in honor of this year’s theme at the school, “Around the World in 180 Days - The Virtual Learning Adventure,” and sent it to him as a thank you.

A Jeopardy-like event called The Battle of the Books is coming and I was approached to give it an updated logo, and these are what I came up with.

The teacher expressed concern that there were no boys competing in the competition, so she asked me to make it feel more exciting for them.

Since the theme is The Virtual Learning Adventure, there’s been a school-wide push for every teacher to get a blog, so I’ve been doing a lot of custom blog headers for various teachers. Here are a couple that I’ve worked on.

And this lead me to an animated avatar for the school’s media specialist, the self-proclaimed Book Fairy.

This is all just a small cross-section of the work I’ve done for the school, but it’s some of the more recent things that I’ve done.
